ANNIHILATION

CHAPTER TEN

Although we may watch from a distance, tragedy is only real when we experience it.

Lady Isla of Elanissia

General Channing was enjoying himself as he watched the flamethrowers damage the dromasaurs. Many of them had gone back towards the desert. At some point he intended to find where they lived and seize their young. Eventually, they would make a deadly killing army for special ops.

The one regret he had was that the family of dragons had deserted their cave. Although it meant not having to deal with them during their operation, he wanted those infants. He would have to find a new nest.

He had seen that the flamethrowers had an unexpected effect on the vines. It looked like they actually felt pain as they were blackened by the flames which caused the other vines in the area to go into a frenzy. What this meant was that the vines over the entire area came from one creature. It was difficult to imagine its size. As long as they were consistent, they could keep the vines back while the workers did their jobs.

Today they had encountered the red jaws secreting the liquid that absorbed flesh and bone. Attached to vines, the jaws had surprisingly shot across the plateau. His soldiers were able to get a sample of the liquid, which would be taken to the lab for Dr. Harlowe to analyze. After that, they used flamethrowers and fried the suckers.

The operation was going much better today, and they used less troops. That was a good sign, since more troops were needed on Aleph. After a long day, General Channing returned to base. He was going through daily reports. The remaining alliance ships that had been disabled during the battle and had lost thrusters were being repaired in Sector 2.

“We think that prisoners may have taken one of the carriers, since there is no response on the coms. When we send men in to investigate, they are attacked, and don’t return,” read one of the reports.

General Channing wrote his instructions on screen with his stylus. They were to tow the carrier in close to the military base, and a tactical unit would deal with it.
